A Scoobaley Doobley Week!
It has been a scoobaley doobley week.  Jam-packed with fun stuff like the poetry slam, field day, the PTO meeting and a whole lot more stuff coming our way.  The homework rate has gone down a lot because we are winding down; we all can’t wait until the end of the year.  And by the way, the kids made the newsletter this week.  (Written by Charlie Blackwell and Quinn Carr)
STOP!  HAVE YOUR CHILD READ THE NEWSLETTER TO YOU!

The First Ever Poetry Slam!
On Tuesday, June 2, our class held the first ever poetry slam.  Before we had the poetry slam the kids made invitations to all the parents to come and visit and watch us recite our own original poems.  We designed the classroom to look like a poetry cafe.  We also learned that at poetry slams, people snapped if they liked the poem.
Thank you to everyone who brought in snacks, they were terrific!  We all got a copy of the poems.  Everyone had jobs to make signs and decorations to make the room look amazing.  We hope everyone had a blast!  (By Cameron LeVeille and Matthew Mulhern)

Portfolios
For the past couple of weeks, we have been putting our portfolio binders together.  When the year is over we would like to have a bunch of memories in the portfolios.  It has been very difficult to put all the papers in subject and date order.  There is a HUGE stack of papers to put on a table, 20 people passing out papers gets VERY MESSY after a while, and also very loud.  But, we doubt that all of the papers will get in the portfolio neatly, nicely, by the end of the year. (Written by Meghan Minturn, Amanda Stiffler and Erica Diaz)

Field Day
Field day was supposed to be on Wednesday, but the rain washed it away to Thursday!  Three colors compete in many activities to win for their team.  It’s a toss up at the beginning but at the end they announce the winner on WGST.  The games range from water games to relay races.  From volleyball to tennis ball throw to games on the blacktop to games on the field to sports trivia to popsicles at the end.  The weather is supposed to be great at 70 degrees.  Everybody has a blast playing against his or her Hubbard Woods friends.  Go Red, White and Blue!  (Written by Clare MacCarthy and Katherine Gjertsen)

Turf Project
Last Friday, as you know, Mr. Gietl didn’t show up.  We were all EXASPERATED at what happened, however, he is “supposed” to come today.  To get ready for him, we went to a PTO meeting at the Nummy’s house on Monday.  We made pros and cons, questions and a list of the process, the cost and the measurements.  Our class hopes that the presentation with Mr. Gietl goes well! (Written by Annie Mollman and Hannah Young)

PTO Meeting and Our Meeting with Dr. Cheever About the Turf Project
First we had a meeting in our classroom, with Dr. Cheever.  We walked to the Nummy’s house and we met with the PTO, and shared our research.  The PTO gave us more questions to ask Mr. Gietl.  They loved our presentations! (Written by Tommy Hines and Maddie Thompson)

What We Read This Week
The books we read this week were Pink and Say by Patricia Pollaco and The Key to the Indian by Lynne Reid Banks.  We just finished the long lastking, Key to the Indian this week.  The kids had fun listening to it.  Another book we read was Pink and Say.  It was about the end of the Civil War.  The pictures were amazing.  They were water colored, and there was a guy who went to jail.  He got out after a few months.  The other guy, the African American, was hung within hours.  (Written by James McCarthy, Jack Lauer and Quinn Campbell)

Cleaning Desks and Moving Seats
On Wednesday, June 3rd, we made the final move of our desks.  We got to move our desks in the place we wanted them to be.  When we moved our desks, we still had to make the three tables.  After we moved our desks, we took stuff out like…
•    Folders, except our take home folder
•    Assignment Notebook
•    Spelling book
•    Spelling test book
•    B.E.S.
•    Poetry Journal
•    Science books
We separated into three different tables, but we got to pick who we wanted to sit next to.  These are the table groups.  They are, one all girl table, one mixed, and one all boy table.  Here are the names of the people at the table:  Table one:  Maddie, annie, Meghan, Clare, Amanda, Katherine, Nora.  At table two there is Erica, Hannah, Hadley, Jack R., Neil, and Quinn Campbell.  At table trhee are Jack L., James, Charlie, Matt, Cameron, Tommy and Quinn Carr.
That is all our tables and people at the tables.  We only have five things left in our desks! (Written by Nora Crumley and Hadley Bushonville)

The Lyric Project
The lyric project has been going very well, and we have been having so much fun.  We have been learning that song lyrics are poetry.  We are making a remix of the songs we have chosen.  So far, they are turning out great.  That is it from Jack Riley and Neil Madlener, have a great day! (Written by Jack Riley and Neil Madlener)

Thank You!
This has been a busy, but wonderful week.  Thank you for sharing your amazing children with me.  We have been so excited about preparing for Mr. Gietl and for our poetry slam on Tuesday.
STOP!  HAVE YOUR CHILD READ THE NEWSLETTER TO YOU!

Math/The Turf Project
As I write this, the kids are in specials.  We have our charts and the room is set up for our special guest.  Each table has a presentation to share with Mr. Gietl.  One group is reviewing the process we went through to measure and get our estimates.  Another group is reviewing possible pros and cons of the replacement of our field.  Finally, we have consolidated our questions and the last group is prepared to share them.
We have a meeting on Monday with Dr. Cheever and then another meeting with the PTO Executive Board later in the morning.  I’m so proud of the kids for taking this project seriously.  Today we shared our plans with our friends in Mr. Scheetz and Mrs. McLellan’s rooms.  They are looking forward to hearing how our project is going.

Social Studies
We wrapped up our interview work by creating a memory poem of the person we interviewed.  These are treasures that I hope you will enjoy too.

Writer’s Workshop
Speaking of poetry, you will receive your invitation today to our first ever poetry slam later today. The event will be on Tuesday, June 2nd at 1:30-2:30pm.  If you can join us, please let us know, so we can plan for the size of the group.  We think you will be quite impressed!

Upcoming events:
•    Tuesday, June 2 1:30-2:30 Poetry Slam @ Hubbard Woods!

Spring Fever
Ask your child what O.E.T. stands for.  We had a bit of O.E.T. that began with three laps around the playground because we missed all of our specials due to a jazz and orchestra concert this morning!   It was a fun way to begin our day!
Despite the fact that there are only 14 days of school left, our class is very busy and has taken on several amazing projects to end our year.  Read on to find out more…
STOP!  HAVE YOUR CHILD READ THE NEWSLETTER TO YOU!

Math/The Turf Project
This week we finished up some review work and are ready to take the end of the year math assessments early next week.
We also put our math knowledge into action by beginning a part of a project we talked about in January.  It began when we started thinking about MLK Jr.’s famous “I Have a Dream Speech.”  We started thinking about things around Hubbard Woods that we love and things that we would like to change.  We wrote letters to Dr. Cheever suggesting how we could fix some of these issues.  She wrote back to each child, and the class chose the playfield as the single issue we would try to solve.  She contacted ForeverLawn, and they sent us several samples and some basic information.      We are meeting with one of their representatives, Todd Gietl, next Friday to discuss the costs and to find out about the process.  We know that the class will obviously not be here when it is completed, but the kids agreed that being a leader is not just doing what is best for ourselves, but for the community.  So, we look forward to the opportunity to speak with Mr. Gietl.
This week, working in three teams, we calculated the square footage of the playground using measuring tapes, measuring wheels and photos of the playground taken from Google Earth to help us plot out the requirements we have for replacing the sod with an artificial turf.  We also researched turf and came up with a series of questions for the representative from ForeverLawn.
We hope that we will take all of this information and be able to make a presentation to Dr. Cheever and possibly the PTO to help them focus their fundraising in the future to a project that would enhance the playground for a long time.  It’s exciting.  We will continue to prepare ourselves for this meeting by practicing interviewing and question asking procedures early next week.

Social Studies
The interviews have been fantastic!  Today we shared the results of our work and the kids reflected in their journals about the process and what things surprised them.  It was very neat to see the similarities we could find between our family relatives, despite their very different stories.  We will be culminating some of this work with a memory book of this person and our very special connections.

Writer’s Workshop
Your children are amazing me with their fondness for poetry.  Not only are they enjoying formulaic poetry, like cinquains, haiku and acrostic poems, they are also exploring free verse and even song lyrics.  There is an overwhelming desire to share their work with you.  So, we are going to have a “Poetry Slam!”  What is a poetry slam?  It is a chance for us to show off a little.  There will be poems shared by every student.  Some will be of their own creation; others will be of their favorite creators.  We are going to have treats, a poet stool and lots of fun.  We hope that you will be able to join us for this celebration of our work.  The event will be on Tuesday, June 2nd at 1:30-2:30pm.  If you can join us, please let us know, so we can plan for the size of the group.  We think you will be quite impressed!

Upcoming events:
•    Monday, May 25th, No School for Memorial Day
•    Thursday, May 28th 1:00-3:00 Skokie Extraveganza at Skokie School
•    Friday, May 29th 11:30-3:00 Safety Patrol Movie Day!
•    Tuesday, June 2 1:30-2:30 Poetry Slam @ Hubbard Woods!
•    Wednesday, June 3rd, All Day- Field Day
•    Tuesday, June 9th, BLAM BALL 9-11:00am
•    Wednesday, June 10th, Class End of the Year Party 2-3:00PM Mann Park
•    Friday, June 12 LAST DAY OF SCHOOL-Farewell Breakfast/Lots of sobbing!

Friday Update

Dear Parents,

I am not able to get a newsletter together today because I am working on a district project this afternoon and have not had a chance to type it yet.  However, I am hopeful that this will suffice.

I talked to the kids today about many awesome things that we are going to do in these last 20 days.  One of them is the family interview project you will find below.  Another is a way to connect poetry to their world.  I’m having the kids look for a favorite song this weekend.  We will be using the lyrics to study the connection to them and poetry; maybe we’ll write our own songs too?  Once an appropriate song is found, they can check the lyrics on many sites, but one is www.lyrics.com

Two other really exciting projects are a surprise math investigation I have planned and a chance to build some wooden birdhouses to place in Mann Park and in the school yard of Hubbard Woods School.

Of course there are many other things going on as well, but I just don’t have time to write about it right now.  I will fill you in next week.

I hope that you have a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Todd Burleson

Immigration Unit
Interview Project

As part of our study of immigration, we are going to interview a family member.  My goal for this project is to get some great stories shared as well as foster some interview skills.  I am going to ask for parental help as we begin to plan the interview.  Please help your child either plan a phone call or, if possible, a chance to visit the relative.

We talked in class today, about how our families have great stories just waiting to be told and shared.  We learned through our African American studies that many stories are passed on through generation by the oral tradition.  Sometimes, the stores are written down and this makes it possible to share with an even wider audience.

In preparing for whom you might interview, think about what the best way to accomplish this.  I recommend that you videotape or record the conversation using a tape player or MP3 recorder.  If you use these tools, you won’t have to worry about writing anything down when you are asking the questions, you can just listen and think of other great questions.  The attached questions are only a starting place.  Feel free to add additional questions as you plan the interview, or even while the interview is taking place.  You may want to send these questions to the person who is going to be interviewed so that they can think about them before hand.

After the interview, choose five questions to write down the answers the person you interviewed gave you.  These will be helpful as we share these with each other and turn them into a family treasure.

We have a long weekend coming up, and many of you may be lucky enough to travel to visit your relatives.  If the interview could take place then, that would be even better!  I would like to wrap up these interviews so that we can move on to the next step by Friday May 22nd.  That gives us a couple of weeks to work on them.

Thank you for all of your support!  If you have any questions, please let me know.  Feel free to call or send an e-mail at burlesot@winnetka36.org

Most sincerely,

Todd Burleson
